Ciri khasnya, seorang penipu email (spammer) membeli sebuah daftar alamat2 email dari daftar yang dimiliki oleh broker (perantara), yang dikumpulkannya dengan “memanen” alamat2 dari Internet. Bila alamat email anda muncul di newsgroup posting, di situs, di chat room, atau di layanan keanggotaan online, ada kemungkinan dari situlah didapatkan daftar2 alamat emailnya. Para penjual kemudian menggunakan peranti lunak khusus yang dapat mengirimkan ratusan, ribuan, bahkan jutaan pesan email ke alamat2 tersebut dengan hanya sekali klik.
Bagaimana mengurangi jumlah spam?
Usahakan tidak memperlihatkan alamat email anda kepada publik.
Periksa kebijaksanaan rahasia pribadi ketika anda mendaftarkan alamat email di sebuah situs. Bacalah dan pahami seluruh isi formulir sebelum mengirim informasi pribadi pada situs itu. Lihatlah bila situs itu punya opsi untuk tidak mengizinkan untuk menjual alamat email anda. Bila situs itu tidak bersedia menjaga kerahasiaan pribadi anda maka jangan mendaftar.
Atau gunakanlah dua alamat email; yang satu khusus untuk pesan pribadi, yang lain untuk newsgroup atau chat room atau lainnya.
Buatlah nama alamat email yang unik. Para spammer menggunakan “kamus” untuk menyortir kemungkinan kombinasi2 nama di Penyedia Layanan Internet (ISP) atau layanan email, dengan harapan mendapatkan alamat yang benar/sah. Maka nama2 umum seperti jdoe, ari, edi, dsb, akan dengan mudah menerima banyak spam ketimbang nama yang lebih unik seperti jd51×02oe, a98r45i, dst. Tentu saja ada sisi lemahnya, yaitu lebih sulit untuk mengingatnya.
Gunakan penyaring/filter email, sehingga setiap mendapatkan email yang seperti spam akan dimasukkan ke folder spam/bulk.
Apa yang harus dilakukan bila menerima Spam?
Laporkan ke ISP/layanan email anda, dengan mengirimkan copy dari seluruh isinya. Dengan melakukan hal itu membantu pihak ISP/layanan email untuk memblok/menghentikannya dikemudian hari.
Ajukan keluhan kepada ISP/layanan email yang mengirimkan spam tsb. Kebanyakan ISP/layanan email ingin menghentikan spammer yang merusak system mereka.
Bagaimana menghindari penipuan Spam?
Jangan pernah percaya akan janji dari orang yang tidak dikenal. Terimalah dengan sikap skeptis tentang kesempatan cara mendapatkan uang yang masuk ke inbox anda. Penipuan diatas adalah modus yang sudah lama ada, hanya saja dikirimkan melalui teknologi canggih.
Dibawah ini contoh umum penipuan:
“Surat berantai”
Surat berantai yang berhubungan dengan uang atau barang berharga dan janji mendapatkan pengembalian berlipat ganda adalah illegal. Bila anda memulainya atau mengirimkan satu surat maka anda melakukan pelanggaran hukum. Kemungkinannya adalah anda hanya akan menerima sedikit atau tidak menerima sama sekali uang yang anda investasikan itu. Walaupun anda klaim, protes, dsb, surat berantai takkan pernah menjadikan anda kaya.
Hampir semua orang menerimanya – surat berantai atau pesan email yang menjanjikan pengembalian besar dari investasi kecil. Janji2 itu termasuk keberuntungan yang tidak diduga, resep yang menggunung, atau lebih buruk, mendapatkan penghargaan finansial yang amat sangat besar dengan mengirim sedikitnya $5 (50rb) kepada seseorang pd sebuah daftar nama atau meneleponnya. Surat berantai yang paling sederhana terdiri dari daftar nama2 dan alamat, dengan instruksi untuk mengirim sesuatu – biasanya sejumlah kecil uang – kepada orang yang berada diurutan puncak daftar, memindahkan/menghilangkan nama itu dari daftar, dan mencantumkan nama anda diurutan terbawah. Kemudian menginstruksikan anda untuk mengirim banyak duplikat surat itu ke email2 tertentu dari orang lain, bersama dengan tatacara untuk bagaimana mereka harus “meneruskan surat berantai” nya. Teori dibalik surat berantai ini adalah begitu nama anda berada diurutan paling atas dari daftar, dengan banyak orang yang terlibat, anda akan dibanjiri dengan apapun yang dijanjikan surat berantai itu. Salah satu surat berantai yang terbaru yang beredar menjanjikan pendapatan $50,000 (ratusan juta rupiah) bahkan lebih dalam waktu 90 hari setelah mengirim email.
Apapun surat berantai yang anda terima, baik dari kantor pos atau email – khususnya yang menyangkut soal uang – FTC (Federal Trade Commision = Komisi Perdagangan Federal Amerika Serikat) mengingatkan anda bahwa:
*Surat berantai yang menyangkut uang atau barang berharga lainnya dan janji2 pengembalian besar adalah illegal. Bila anda memulainya atau mengirimkannya keseseorang, anda telah melanggar hukum.
*Kemungkinan anda menerima sedikit bahkan tidak menerima sama sekali uang yang diinvestasikan. Walaupun anda klaim atau tuntut, surat berantai tidak akan pernah menjadikan anda kaya.
*Beberapa surat berantai akan berusaha untuk meyakinkan anda bahwa mereka legal, bahkan mereka menyatakan didukung oleh Pemerintah/Bank. Tidak ada satupun yang benar.
“Iklan Skema Bekerja Di Rumah”
Tidak semua kesempatan “bekerja di rumah” memberi hasil sebagaimana janji mereka. Banyak iklan mengabaikan fakta bahwa justru anda harus bekerja berjam-jam tanpa bayaran. Atau mereka tidak merinci semua biaya yang anda keluarkan. Skema ini menuntut anda untuk mengeluarkan uang anda sendiri untuk memasang iklan di koran2, mambuat banyak fotokopi, membeli amplop, perangko, dan banyak alat2 lagi untuk melakukan pekerjaan itu. Belum lagi perusahaan yang menjadi sponsor iklan itu menuntut anda untuk membayar “buku petunjuk/instruksi” nya. Konsumen yang tertipu oleh iklan2 ini telah kehilangan jutaan rupiah uang mereka, belum lagi waktu dan tenaga mereka.
“Program Punurunan Berat Badan”
Program atau produk yang mempromosikan cara mudah dan singkat menurunkan berat badan tidak akan berguna. Menurunkan dan menjaga berat badan, membutuhkan latihan fisik dan perubahan permanen cara diet anda. Semua kesaksian dan garansi/jaminan di email anda tidaklah berharga untuk mengambil ruang di harddisk anda.
“Penawaran Penghapusan Kartu Kredit”
Abaikan penawaran untuk menghapus informasi negatif dari kartu kredit anda. Tidak ada yang resmi/legal untuk melakukan hal itu.
“Pinjaman Dimuka”
Hati2 terhadap janji untuk mendapatkan pinjaman, tanpa memperhatikan sejarah kredit anda yang lalu. Ingatlah, bank yang resmi tidak akan menerbitkan kartu tanpa mengecek kredit anda.
“Hiburan Untuk Dewasa”.
Anda mungkin mendapatkan email dari situs hiburan untuk dewasa yang menawarkan “isinya” dengan gratis dan tidak memerlukan nomor kartu kredit untuk mengaksesnya. Yang anda lakukan hanyalah dowload program “viewer” atau “dialer” nya. Betapapun, begitu programnya terinstall di komputer anda, ia akan memutuskan koneksi Internet anda dan menyambungkannya kembali ke nomor panggilan international, dengan biaya antara 20rb hingga 70rb permenitnya. Selalulah bersikap ragu bila anda melihat kesempatan untuk melihat konten/isi/muatan “gratis” di situs.
